IMED Hospitals begun the Robotic Surgery Programme with the incorporation of a da Vinci Xi-HD surgical robot installed in the IMED Valencia hospital.

The objective of this action is to offer all patients this last generation technology for the indications established, and be on the cutting edge of surgical treatment, (being nowadays the only robot with these features available in the Valencian Community).

The surgical robot da Vinci is the most sophisticated and innovating technique minimally invasive available nowadays, it offers the same results and better than the conventional surgery, with the benefits of a minimally invasive surgery.

The surgical robot Da Vinci is a robotic platform sophisticated in which the surgeon directs its arms from a console, through manual control and pedals, using a stereoscopic vision system. The da Vinci robot helps the surgeon on the performance of the most difficult surgeries through a minimally invasive surgery.

Advantages of the Da Vinci robot techniques:

  • Three dimension vision (3D).
  • Four arms that holds, without shaking and without release, the endoscopic tools and the camera.

  • Extreme mobility of the endoscopic tools that provides more movement range and accuracy, and allows making intra-body movements in all space senses simulating intuitively the hand human movements.

  • Advantages of the minimally invasive surgery: less post-operative pain, reduction of negative aesthetic impact of the scars, less hospitalization time, fast incorporation to normal life, and less infection and complications risk.


In 2016 more than 700.000 interventions were performed all over the world. According to specialties, most of the surgical procedures were of urology, then general and digestive system surgery and gynaecology. Nowadays to this technology are integrated other specialties as cardiothoracic surgery, pediatrics surgery and otolaryngology.

All surgery that can be performed with laparoscopy can be performed with robotic surgery also, having a biggest benefit when the procedure is more complicated. There is a biggest proof of robotic surgery in those procedures that relate functional results as radical prostatectomy and rectum resection, where there is a lower rate of relevance and incontinence than in open surgery or laparoscopy.
